Does sexual harassment happen in academia? How would you react if it happens to you or others around you? How can we open up the discussion? What should the university do?

To discuss these questions and more, Halkes Women Faculty Network together with Radboud Women of Computing Science organised a joint workshop about #MeToo in academia on Tuesday 24th April 2018.

Drs. Wilma de Koning, vice president of the executive board opened the event.

Prof. em. Toine Lagro-Janssen held a keynote about the facts and figures regarding sexual harassment in general, and in academia in particular. She also gave some recommendations and do’s and don’ts, which can be found here (pdf, 539 kB).

Heleen Kloosterhuis, one of the confidential advisors of Radboud University, talked about the role of confidential advisors and what they can and cannot do for victims of sexual harassment in academia. She showed an insightful video, which can be found here. For more information, see: https://www.radboudnet.nl/english/employees/miscellaneous/confidential-advisors/

After that there was a fruitful discussion in small groups, led by dr. Inge Bleijenbergh. The discussion raised several issues and insights, ranging from personal experiences to practical tips to ideas about what the university should do to tackle the problem. A summary will be presented on our website soon.
